Soak the seeds for a period that depends on the type of seed used.
Rinse them well and put them in a jar like container with the lid tightly covered with a piece of cloth.
Place the jar in a place that does not get much light and at room temperature.
Rinse and drain the sprouts a number of times per day, depending on the type of seed used. Repeat this procedure daily until full sprouts are obtained.
If greener sprouts are desired, expose them for a couple of hours to indirect sunlight (a window sill would be perfect).
To avoid bacterial contamination, it is very important that the seeds used come from trusted suppliers, and that strictly hygienic methods are used for the germination process. For instance, if you are going to use jars, make sure that they were properly washed to eliminate the presence of bacteria.
Finally, equip yourself with adequate information regarding the seeds, beans or legumes you will be using, so that you can effectively provide the environmental conditions required by them (number of times per day to rinse, the ideal cultivation temperature, etc.)
Even though you could use the above method to grow your sprouts at home, to simplify the cultivation task, to enforce a hygienic germination process, and to avoid problems such as forgetting to rinse the sprouts at regular intervals, it is recommended to use commercially available sprouters. The following important features need to be considered when buying a commercially available sprouter.
What to Look for When Buying a Commercial Sprouter
Footprint: It is important to choose a sprouter that will fit in your kitchen or wherever you intend to place it. In general, because sprouters can be stacked, they do not require too much space, but while some sprouters require very little space, others may require larger footprint.
Manual or Automatic: Automatic sprouters are equipped with water reservoirs, and once the reservoirs are filled with water, watering and rinsing of seeds is done automatically. Some sprouters allow even to program the frequency and intervals at which the irrigation of the sprouts will be performed. If you are not well organized or forgetful, you should definitely opt for an automatic unit. Skipping inadvertently a rinsing could spoil the sprouts.
